10-Day Kenya Wildlife Photography Safari — Samburu to Maasai Mara

Depart Nairobi and drive north through changing highland and semi-arid scenery. Reach Samburu and settle into the selected lodge or camp before an afternoon game drive. Use the late light to begin working with northern landscapes, river habitat and wildlife around the Ewaso Nyiro system. The private vehicle allows the guide to position carefully without a shared-group timetable.

Start early for cooler conditions and morning light. Search for reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, elephants and predators while also using the riverine habitat for birds and environmental images. Return to the lodge during harsh midday light if preferred, then head out again for the afternoon. A dedicated photography session, cultural visit, walk or sundowner can be added separately.

After breakfast, travel south toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Check in and use the afternoon for wildlife photography and an introduction to the conservancy’s conservation work. The landscape and conservation context provide a visual contrast with Samburu. Finish with late-afternoon wildlife time before dinner.

Spend a full day in Ol Pejeta. Photograph wildlife across the conservancy and visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary according to current visitor times. Learn about rhino conservation and, where an additional specialist experience has been booked, integrate it into the day without sacrificing the best wildlife-light periods. Return to the selected accommodation for a second night.

Drive to Lake Nakuru and enter the national park for an afternoon photography-focused game drive. Work around lake-edge habitat, woodland and open areas for rhinos, birds, landscapes and general wildlife. Bird numbers vary seasonally, so the emphasis is on the full park ecosystem rather than promising one species concentration.

Take an early Lake Nakuru drive before transferring to Lake Naivasha. The afternoon is intentionally lighter and can be used for a boat-based bird and lake photography session, Crescent Island walk, lakeshore photography or rest. The exact choice is confirmed separately because weather and water conditions affect lake activities.

Leave Naivasha after breakfast and drive toward Maasai Mara. After check-in, take an afternoon game drive timed for the softer late-day light where arrival permits. Begin identifying productive areas for the next two full days and discuss the photography priorities with your guide.

Begin at first useful light and work with current wildlife reports. Instead of racing between distant sightings, your private guide can stay with strong subjects when conditions are ethical and worthwhile. Focus may include predators, elephants, plains game, birds and environmental compositions. Optional ballooning can replace the first morning session if selected.

Hot Air Balloon Safari Early morning / approximately 3–4 hours

A sunrise balloon flight over the greater Maasai Mara landscape, normally followed by a landing experience and breakfast arrangement depending on the operator. It is sold separately from normal game drives and must be pre-booked.

Use a second full Mara day to explore a different sector or revisit areas producing strong wildlife activity. The itinerary can include a conservancy walk, cultural visit, bush breakfast or sundowner where appropriate, but photographers may prefer to keep both peak-light periods entirely dedicated to game viewing. Dinner and a third Mara night follow.

Optional experiences

Guided Conservancy Nature Walk 1.5–3 hours

A ranger- or guide-led walking experience in a conservancy or other area where walking is permitted. The activity focuses on tracks, plants, smaller wildlife, landscapes and safari interpretation away from a vehicle.

A late-afternoon scenic stop arranged in an approved location with refreshments as the light softens over the Mara landscape. It can be used for couples, private groups or special-occasion itineraries.

An outdoor breakfast arranged by the selected camp or lodge in an approved safari setting. Menu, venue, minimum guest numbers and weather backup arrangements vary by property.

Use the morning according to flight timing: either a short final game drive or a relaxed breakfast before departure. Drive back to Nairobi and transfer to the confirmed hotel or airport. Image backups, luggage arrangements and any onward accommodation can be planned during the final quotation.
