Depart Nairobi and drive north through changing highland and semi-arid scenery. Reach Samburu and settle into the selected lodge or camp before an afternoon game drive. Use the late light to begin working with northern landscapes, river habitat and wildlife around the Ewaso Nyiro system. The private vehicle allows the guide to position carefully without a shared-group timetable.
10-Day Kenya Wildlife Photography Safari — Samburu to Maasai Mara
A slower private wildlife circuit built around light, positioning, habitat variety and time behind the camera.
Private Kenya safaris designed for international and non-resident travellers.
This ten-day private Kenya safari is shaped for travellers who value photography and unhurried wildlife observation. Two nights in Samburu provide dry-country species, riverine habitat and dramatic northern light. Two nights in the Ol Pejeta/Laikipia area allow conservation stories and private wildlife time without compressing the conservancy into a roadside stop. Lake Nakuru adds rhinos and birds, Lake Naivasha brings a quieter water-and-landscape day, and the itinerary culminates with three nights in the Maasai Mara so the guide can work across different light, weather and wildlife conditions. Current ten-day Kenya safari inventory frequently uses Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Nakuru, Naivasha and Maasai Mara in this sequence. Courtesywide differentiates this version with photography-oriented pacing while retaining normal private-safari flexibility for non-photographers.
Start early for cooler conditions and morning light. Search for reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, elephants and predators while also using the riverine habitat for birds and environmental images. Return to the lodge during harsh midday light if preferred, then head out again for the afternoon. A dedicated photography session, cultural visit, walk or sundowner can be added separately.
A guided walking experience in a lodge, conservancy or approved area where walking is permitted, focusing on tracks, plants, landscapes and smaller wildlife.
Available upon requestA scenic sunset refreshment stop arranged by the selected camp or lodge in an approved location.
Available upon requestAfter breakfast, travel south toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Check in and use the afternoon for wildlife photography and an introduction to the conservancy’s conservation work. The landscape and conservation context provide a visual contrast with Samburu. Finish with late-afternoon wildlife time before dinner.
Spend a full day in Ol Pejeta. Photograph wildlife across the conservancy and visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary according to current visitor times. Learn about rhino conservation and, where an additional specialist experience has been booked, integrate it into the day without sacrificing the best wildlife-light periods. Return to the selected accommodation for a second night.
A guided wildlife drive in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, selected from Nanyuki or Laikipia itineraries. Conservancy entry and vehicle arrangements should be costed separately from accommodation.
Available upon requestA conservation-focused visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary within Ol Pejeta, normally combined with a conservancy visit and subject to current visitor arrangements.
Available upon requestA behind-the-scenes conservation-focused activity arranged through the selected conservancy or lodge, potentially covering wildlife monitoring, community conservation or conservation operations.
Available upon requestDrive to Lake Nakuru and enter the national park for an afternoon photography-focused game drive. Work around lake-edge habitat, woodland and open areas for rhinos, birds, landscapes and general wildlife. Bird numbers vary seasonally, so the emphasis is on the full park ecosystem rather than promising one species concentration.
Take an early Lake Nakuru drive before transferring to Lake Naivasha. The afternoon is intentionally lighter and can be used for a boat-based bird and lake photography session, Crescent Island walk, lakeshore photography or rest. The exact choice is confirmed separately because weather and water conditions affect lake activities.
A guided boat excursion on Lake Naivasha for lake scenery, birdlife and wildlife observation from the water. Operating time and route depend on weather and water conditions.
Available upon requestA guided or hosted walking experience on Crescent Island, allowing guests to explore open landscapes and view wildlife on foot under the site’s operating rules.
Available upon requestLeave Naivasha after breakfast and drive toward Maasai Mara. After check-in, take an afternoon game drive timed for the softer late-day light where arrival permits. Begin identifying productive areas for the next two full days and discuss the photography priorities with your guide.
Begin at first useful light and work with current wildlife reports. Instead of racing between distant sightings, your private guide can stay with strong subjects when conditions are ethical and worthwhile. Focus may include predators, elephants, plains game, birds and environmental compositions. Optional ballooning can replace the first morning session if selected.
A sunrise balloon flight over the greater Maasai Mara landscape, normally followed by a landing experience and breakfast arrangement depending on the operator. It is sold separately from normal game drives and must be pre-booked.
Available upon requestUse a second full Mara day to explore a different sector or revisit areas producing strong wildlife activity. The itinerary can include a conservancy walk, cultural visit, bush breakfast or sundowner where appropriate, but photographers may prefer to keep both peak-light periods entirely dedicated to game viewing. Dinner and a third Mara night follow.
A ranger- or guide-led walking experience in a conservancy or other area where walking is permitted. The activity focuses on tracks, plants, smaller wildlife, landscapes and safari interpretation away from a vehicle.
Available upon request
A late-afternoon scenic stop arranged in an approved location with refreshments as the light softens over the Mara landscape. It can be used for couples, private groups or special-occasion itineraries.
Available upon request
An outdoor breakfast arranged by the selected camp or lodge in an approved safari setting. Menu, venue, minimum guest numbers and weather backup arrangements vary by property.

Is this safari only for professional photographers?
No. It suits enthusiasts and wildlife travellers as well. The itinerary simply allows more time and flexibility for light, positioning and patient sightings.
Can I request fewer guests per vehicle?
Yes. Because this is a private safari, vehicle allocation can be configured around your party and photography needs; the final cost reflects the agreed configuration.
Why three nights in Maasai Mara?
Photography benefits from multiple dawn and late-afternoon opportunities and from having time to respond to changing wildlife rather than rushing through the reserve.
Can I photograph from a boat at Lake Naivasha?
A boat ride can be added subject to weather, lake conditions and operator availability, and can be useful for bird and lakescape photography.
Are specialist photographic guides included?
A professional safari driver-guide is included. A specialist photographic guide or additional photographic vehicle support can be quoted separately where available.
