8-Day Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru & Maasai Mara Private Safari

Depart Nairobi after the agreed pick-up and travel north through Kenya’s central highlands toward Samburu. As the altitude and vegetation change, the route opens into drier northern scenery. Check in at the selected camp or lodge and take an afternoon game drive if arrival time allows. Focus on the river corridor and surrounding dryland habitat before dinner and overnight.

Spend the full day exploring Samburu National Reserve in your private 4x4. The dry northern habitat supports a distinctive wildlife community, including reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, alongside elephants and predators. Your guide can allocate more time to photography, birding or specific habitats. Optional cultural visits, walks where permitted, sundowners and photography sessions can be selected separately.

After breakfast, travel south toward Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Check in and begin an afternoon conservancy drive, introducing the landscape and conservation work. Depending on current opening times and your confirmed programme, visit selected standard conservation points and continue with wildlife viewing before dinner and overnight.

Use the early part of the day for a final Ol Pejeta wildlife or conservation experience, including the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary according to current visitor hours. Then drive south toward Lake Nakuru. Enter the national park for an afternoon game drive if time permits, focusing on rhinos, birdlife, lake scenery and woodland wildlife before settling into the selected Nakuru accommodation.

Begin with an early Lake Nakuru game drive if required by the confirmed schedule, then travel toward the Maasai Mara. Arrive at the selected camp or lodge and enter the reserve or chosen conservancy for an afternoon game drive where timing allows. This introduction helps your guide plan the next two full safari days around current wildlife activity.

Spend a full private safari day exploring the Maasai Mara. Work through open plains, riverine areas and predator habitat according to current wildlife reports. The private format allows the guide to stay longer at worthwhile sightings and adapt the route to photography or birding interests. A picnic lunch can maximise field time, while optional ballooning or cultural experiences remain separately selectable.

Hot Air Balloon Safari Early morning / approximately 3–4 hours

A sunrise balloon flight over the greater Maasai Mara landscape, normally followed by a landing experience and breakfast arrangement depending on the operator. It is sold separately from normal game drives and must be pre-booked.

Maasai Cultural Village Visit 1–2 hours

A hosted cultural visit introducing Maasai homestead life, traditions and community stories. The visit should be arranged through an appropriate local host and presented as an optional cultural experience rather than part of the game-drive description.

A second full day gives the Mara section genuine depth. Revisit productive wildlife areas or explore a different sector, depending on the selected accommodation and protected area. Guests can dedicate the day to photography, birding, a conservancy experience, a cultural visit or standard game viewing. Optional walking or sundowner experiences are arranged only in areas where they are permitted and operationally available.

Guided Conservancy Nature Walk 1.5–3 hours

A ranger- or guide-led walking experience in a conservancy or other area where walking is permitted. The activity focuses on tracks, plants, smaller wildlife, landscapes and safari interpretation away from a vehicle.

Maasai Mara Sundowner 1–2 hours

A late-afternoon scenic stop arranged in an approved location with refreshments as the light softens over the Mara landscape. It can be used for couples, private groups or special-occasion itineraries.

Bush Breakfast Experience 1–2 hours

An outdoor breakfast arranged by the selected camp or lodge in an approved safari setting. Menu, venue, minimum guest numbers and weather backup arrangements vary by property.

After breakfast, leave the Maasai Mara and drive back to Nairobi, with suitable comfort stops en route. A short final wildlife sector may be possible depending on lodge position and departure timing. Arrive for drop-off at the confirmed hotel or airport, ending the eight-day private safari.
