12-Day Grand Kenya Safari — Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Nakuru, Naivasha, Maasai Mara & Amboseli

Leave Nairobi and travel north through the central highlands toward Samburu. The changing scenery marks the start of the north-to-south journey. Check in at the selected camp/lodge and take an afternoon game drive where arrival time permits, focusing on the Ewaso Nyiro river environment and the reserve’s distinctive dryland wildlife.

Spend a full day on private game drives in Samburu National Reserve. Search riverine and dryland habitats for northern species, elephants, predators and birdlife. Optional experiences include a Samburu cultural visit, nature walk where permitted, dedicated photography or a sundowner. Return for a second night in Samburu.

After breakfast, travel south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Check in and spend the afternoon on a private game drive introducing the conservancy’s wildlife and conservation work. The slower two-night stay gives flexibility for standard visitor experiences and any specialist conservation activity booked in advance.

Use the full day for Ol Pejeta wildlife and conservation. Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary under current operating hours, explore rhino habitat and continue private game viewing. Additional conservation experiences can be integrated if booked, while the normal safari remains flexible around wildlife movement and guest interests.

Drive from Laikipia toward Nakuru and enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a private game drive. Explore lake-edge habitat, acacia woodland, open areas and viewpoints while looking for black and white rhinos, birds and general wildlife. Overnight in the selected Nakuru accommodation.

Take a final morning wildlife drive if required, then continue to Lake Naivasha. The day intentionally slows the pace between major parks. Choose a boat ride, Crescent Island walking experience, birding session or simply relax at the lodge. Active guests can request Hell’s Gate cycling or hiking if the schedule and current park conditions allow.

Depart Naivasha after breakfast and travel to the Maasai Mara. Check in at the selected camp or lodge and head out for an afternoon game drive where arrival time allows. Your guide uses this first session to assess current wildlife activity and plan the next two full days.

Spend the full day exploring Maasai Mara. Follow current wildlife information, work through predator territories and riverine habitats, and allow time for elephants, plains game, birdlife and landscape photography. An optional sunrise balloon safari can be added before the main game drive.

Hot Air Balloon Safari Early morning / approximately 3–4 hours

A sunrise balloon flight over the greater Maasai Mara landscape, normally followed by a landing experience and breakfast arrangement depending on the operator. It is sold separately from normal game drives and must be pre-booked.

A second complete Mara day makes the safari less dependent on one day’s sightings or weather. Explore another sector, spend longer with worthwhile wildlife or add a cultural visit, conservancy walk where permitted, bush breakfast or sundowner. Guests focused on photography can keep the day entirely dedicated to game viewing.

Maasai Cultural Village Visit 1–2 hours

A hosted cultural visit introducing Maasai homestead life, traditions and community stories. The visit should be arranged through an appropriate local host and presented as an optional cultural experience rather than part of the game-drive description.

Guided Conservancy Nature Walk 1.5–3 hours

A ranger- or guide-led walking experience in a conservancy or other area where walking is permitted. The activity focuses on tracks, plants, smaller wildlife, landscapes and safari interpretation away from a vehicle.

Maasai Mara Sundowner 1–2 hours

A late-afternoon scenic stop arranged in an approved location with refreshments as the light softens over the Mara landscape. It can be used for couples, private groups or special-occasion itineraries.

Bush Breakfast Experience 1–2 hours

An outdoor breakfast arranged by the selected camp or lodge in an approved safari setting. Menu, venue, minimum guest numbers and weather backup arrangements vary by property.

Leave the Mara and begin the longer journey toward Amboseli, using Nairobi or another suitable point for a comfort and meal break according to the operating plan. Arrive at Amboseli and settle into the selected camp or lodge. Where timing allows, enjoy a short late game drive before dinner. Exact transfer timings are confirmed during quotation so the itinerary remains realistic.

Spend a full day in Amboseli. Begin early for wildlife movement, cooler conditions and the possibility of clear views toward Mount Kilimanjaro. Explore the marshes and plains, visit Observation Hill where appropriate and adapt the route around elephants, general game, birds and photography. Optional cultural, birding or sundowner experiences can be added separately.

Use the morning for a final Amboseli game drive or relaxed breakfast depending on the onward flight schedule. Leave the park and drive back to Nairobi for drop-off at the confirmed hotel or airport. A coast extension or Nairobi post-safari stay can be added as a separate component.
